Oak Mountain pole-vaulter Brad Passen needed every one of his jumps Saturday evening to set a new school record and win the boy&8217;s vault competition at Vestavia Hills&8217; King of the Mountain invitational track meet.

Having missed his first two attempts at a height of 13 feet, Passen cleared the bar on his final jump to advance to the next height alongside Hoover vaulters David Buster and Michael Lee. Both Bucs missed on all three of their attempts, leaving Passen with a shot at first place.

&8220;I had really been blowing through my jumps all day,&8221; Passen said. &8220;On the last jump I was hoping I could go up and over instead of through the bar.&8221;

Passen narrowly cleared the height of 13 feet, 6 inches giving him the invitational title and a new school record in the event.
