Howard Wayne Harkins, 71, of the Pea Ridge community in Montevallo died Friday, March 10, 2006, in Alabaster after a tough battle with a lengthy illness.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served proudly on the board of the Pea Ridge Fire Department. He was retired from Westinghouse Corporation and the state of Alabama, having served as Montevallo&8217;s building inspector. He was a member of the Montevallo Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Shelby Jean Harkins of Montevallo; two daughters, Rhonda Jean (Roy) Lucas of Montevallo and Rachel Kaye (John) Jarrett of Alabaster; and three grandchildren, Cheryl and Emily Lucas and Alex Jarrett.

Service was March 13 at 11 a.m. at Rockco&8217;s Chapel, Joe Pruitt and Manliff Barnes presiding. Burial followed in Montevallo Cemetery, Rockco&8217;s Funeral Home directing.
