A handful of Shelby County residents will join nearly 100 runners from across the Southeast this Saturday to compete in the Oak Mountain State Park 50-kilometer trail run.

The course, which stretches 33.1 miles and weaves its way through the entire park, has an elevation change of 3,500 feet.

Pelham resident Maggie Amsler said she is running the race for a new challenge.

&8220;The race intrigues me,&8221; Amsler said. &8220;I enjoy running on trails.&8221;

Runners have up to nine hours to complete the course, but few of the competitors are worried about where they place in the event.

&8220;I&8217;m not considering this a race,&8221; Amsler said. &8220;I&8217;m just participating and want to finish.&8221;

Other Shelby County residents signed up to compete in the race include Sherry Meador of Harpersville and Norman Pless and Jeff Scott of Birmingham.

The race is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m.
