Baseball results: Lions fall to St. Clair

Briarwood head baseball coach Lee Hall knew his team would have a tough test against St. Clair County Monday night at UAB&8217;s Young Memorial Field, a team that came into the game on a nine-game win streak.

The Lions took an early 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning, but the St. Clair Saints reeled off six runs to end the inning and eventually won the game 6-4.

&8220;We got out-played in all three areas of the game,&8221; Hall said. &8220;They out-pitched us on the mound and got big hits when they needed to.&8221;

Senior pitcher Brian Jeffcoat took the loss for the Lions, giving up five hits and four runs in two innings of work.

Senior shortstop Jeremy Hall finished the game with two stolen bases, two runs scored and a triple.

&8220;I threw our top three pitchers tonight,&8221; Hall said. &8220;They got clutch hits when they needed them and we hit ground balls when we needed big plays.&8221;

Junior Luke Furuto pitched three innings after Jeffcoat was pulled in the third inning, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three batters.

The loss dropped Briarwood to 14-10 on the season as the Lions prepare to face the Thompson Warriors tonight and begin region play against Sylacauga on Friday.

Kingwood Christian 7, Bessemer Academy 5: The Kingwood Christian Lions edged Bessemer Academy Monday night, 7-5.

Brooks Webb finished the night with two doubles and an RBI to help advance the Lions&8217; overall record this season to 9-2.
