Qualifying ends for elections

Shelby County&8217;s political deck of cards is about to get shuffled.
As the Friday deadline for qualifying to run for a local or state elected position came and went Friday, a number of local incumbents found themselves facing opposition.
With the June 6 primary less than two months away, local political races have begun to heat up.
Circuit clerk incumbent Mary Harris of Alabaster faces a challenge from Stephanie Freeman Roulier of Wilsonville while incumbent Sheriff Chris Curry will face opposition from Jim Walters, also of Wilsonville.
Place one and two on the Shelby County Board of Education are being challenged this year, with incumbents Lee Doebler of Alabaster and Steve Martin of north Shelby County facing Frank May of north Shelby County and Bragan Baldwin Patterson of the same area.
Probate Judge Patricia Fuhrmeister will run unopposed for her third term while Circuit Judge (Place 2) H.L. &8220;Sonny&8221; Conwill of Vincent also has no challenger.
However, a number of current officials have decided not to run for office again. These officials include Shelby County coroner Doug Ballard and Shelby County schools superintendent Evan Major.
Diane Steele Hawkins of Columbiana and Sherwood Florence of Pelham are vying for the vacancy that will be left by Ballard while three Shelby County school system administrators will try to follow in Major&8217;s footsteps as superintendents. Assistant Shclby County schools superintendent Tom Ferguson will be joined by Vincent High School principal Garry Minnick and Oak Mountain High School principal Randy Fuller in the race for the superintendent seat.
