Indian Springs boys&8217; tennis coach Boo Mason&8217;s journey towards winning a state tennis title came to an end Friday when his squad won the AHSAA Class 1A-3A championships in Montgomery.

The title had eluded Mason for 26 years before Indian Springs edged defending state champion Montgomery Academy for the victory, 57-53.

The team championship was decided at the doubles No. 3 spot on Friday in a match between ISS&8217;s Patrick McGowan and Aljosha Barach

and Montgomery Academy&8217;s Forrest Fleming and Holland Wakefield. McGowan and Barach defeated the Montgomery duo 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to win the state title.

Indian Springs&8217; Arie Hefter won the No. 1 spot state title over Randolph&8217;s Alex Rafiee 7-6, 6-2 while teammate Bryan Song defeated Houston Academy&8217;s Harris Barnard 6-3, 5-7, 7-6. Aljosha Barath won at the No. 4 spot for Indian Springs while McGowan was victorious at the No. 6 singles spot.

The Indian Springs girls team finished third at the Class 1A-3A state meet on Friday, finishing with 36 points behind Houston Academy (60) and Bayside Academy (48).

Julia Gogoll won at the singles No. 4 spot over Bayside Academy&8217;s Ann Brooks Hogsdon 6-4, 6-3.

CLASS 6A

Oak Mountain girls finish second in Class 6A

The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles fell just short of a state title last week in the Class 6A girls&8217; state tennis championships in Montgomery, finishing second behind the Mountain Brook Lady Spartans by 17 points (71-54).

Oak Mountain&8217;s Alli Nolen was the sole singles winner for the Lady Eagles, clinching the state title at the No. 3 spot over with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Mountain Brook&8217;s Catherine Adams.

The Lady Eagles&8217; No. 2 doubles team of Mallory Waites and Danielle Brown were victorious over the Lady Spartans&8217; Kathryn Hudak and Allison Hudak 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the boys&8217; Class 6A state tournament, Pelham&8217;s John Flaniken defeated Spain Park&8217;s Martin Strickler 6-2, 6-3.

The Pelham Panthers finished third in Class 6A with 31 points behind Hoover and Vestavia Hills. Spain park finished seventh with 26 points while Oak Mountain finished ninth with nine points.

CLASS 5A

Briarwood girls finished second in Class 5A

The Briarwood Christian girls&8217; tennis team finished in second place with 46 points behind St. Paul&8217;s (77) last week in the Class 5A tennis state championships.

Cathryn Marie Albright highlighted the Lady Lions&8217; tournament, winning the singles state title at the No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-2 over St. Paul&8217;s Nene Stephens.

Albright also joined teammate Renee Nicholas to win the title at the doubles No. 1 spot 6-4, 6-2 over St. Paul&8217;s Stephens sisters
