Planning commission says no to strip mall development proposal

The Shelby County planning commission denied an unpopular proposal for a new shopping center south of Calera on Monday.
Audience members applauded the decision after local residents in two neighborhoods that border the property in question expressed their concerns regarding issues such as noise, traffic and crime.
The property sits on the west side of Highway 31 just south of Calera, near the Willow Cove and Ridgecrest subdivisions.
Planning commissioner Bob Land made the motion to deny the proposal, which was submitted by Abdul Ali and Shaheen Inc. and would have included a 7,200-square-foot strip mall.
Land said the commission was concerned about the possibility of a gas station, bar and used car lot being built on the property as well
