The Coosa Valley Academy Rebels lost more than just a game against Sumter Academy Oct. 14.
The Rebels, who dressed only 20 players, have been plagued with injuries all season, and Friday night was no different as three starters went down in the third quarter as Coosa Valley was trailing 28-21.
“It’s been like that all year, every game” Rebels head coach Bobby Hughes said. “We’ve never had the same players start and finish a game all season.”
Sumter Academy began piling on the points against a short-handed Rebels squad, finishing with a 75-35 win.
“Offensively, we did well,” Hughes said. “We moved the ball. Their offense was just better than our defense.”
Senior Cody Wood completed 27-of-39 passes for 282 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Senior Hunter Winslett hauled in seven passes for 91 yards, adding 14 yards on five carries. Sophomore Tyler Hickman caught six passes for 69 yards, senior Preston Parker reeled in five passes for 47 yards, and senior Cody Garret totaled 40 yards with three receptions.
Junior Landon Floyd carried the ball three times for 20 yards, and senior Mason Donahoo, who went down in the third quarter, racked up 56 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries.
Parker and Winslett had 13 tackles each, and junior Joe Miller racked up eight stops on the night.
Coosa Valley will hold senior night at it hosts Ellwood Christian Academy next week.
