U.S. Representative Artur Davis spoke on the legacy on 9-11 to almost 150 University of Montevallo students, faculty, staff and community members this past Monday to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Davis, a Democratic from Alabama seventh congressional district, first spoke on what he was doing that Tuesday morning when he learned American was under attack.

&8220;I don&8217;t know how you people remember that day,&8221; said Davis. &8220;I remember going outside and it was as beautiful day as you can have in early September.&8221;

&8220;I remember thinking what in the world would we become,&8221; he continued. &8220;Will this make us strong and proud or fearful of the future?&8221;

He said the country lost something special that day.

&8220;We did lose something. We thought our oceans protected us, that terrorists&8217; attacks happen somewhere else. We lost our sense of innocence,&8221; said Davis.

Davis, who was running for election against 10-year incumbent Earl Hilliard, also said he remembers the country coming together for a period of what he calls &8220;sustained purpose.&8221; He said since then, partly due to election politics, the country &8220;has found so many things to fight about.&8221;

He told the audience that &8220;everybody counts even if we disagree with each other.&8221;
