County fair good, wholesome family fun

Growing up in the black belt, practically on a National Forest, there was never very much excitement. More cows lived on the dirt road I called home than people.

I always had the upper hand on any college buddies who complained that there was nothing to do in Montevallo. All I had to say was &uot;you think there’s nothing to do here…&uot; and the eyes would start rolling.

I guess that’s why some of my best memories from childhood are when a fair, circus, rodeo or the like would come to town. Its meant something fun to do, usually something good to eat (especially at my hometown Greensboro’s catfish festival) and a general time of good fun with family and friends.

Even today, call it nostalgia, homesickness or whatever, I still get excited when something new comes to town. That’s why I can wait to go to the Shelby County fair this week.

There’s something about the small town feel of a county fair that is unique, homey, wholesome whether you be 9 or 90.

I like the rides and food the best, but there’s truly something for everyone at our county’s fair. It will feature homegrown farm produce, plants and flowers, arts and crafts, 4-H livestock shows and local entertainment. Where else can you find so much to do for $8
