Spain Park tops Mountain Brook, readies for Bucs

The 6A Spain Park Jaguars are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in regional play following a season opening win over Pelham and a 36-32 region win over Mountain Brook this Friday night.

&8220;It was a great high school football game,&8221; said Spain Park head football coach John Grass. &8220;All our kids played real well.&8221; He especially noted the goal line stand by his Jaguars at the end of the game.

Grass recognized Sean Thompson, who he said had 17 tackles, quarterback Cody Wells, who completed 26 of 33 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns and Justin Diliberto who gained 170 yards on 11 carries.

Grass&8217; team was penalized more, 11-90 yards to 6-65 yards for Mountain Brook.

The Jaguars did most of their damage through the air with 381 yards passing and 139 yards rushing for 520 total yards.

Mountain Brook gained 287 yards rushing and 130 yards passing for 417 yards. Scoring for Spain Park were:

Diliberto on a 2-yard run with Ben Meadow PAT.

Meadows on a 22-yard field goal.

Diliberto on a 59-yard touchdown reception.

Marko Henderson on a 20-yard interception return with Meadows PAT.

Diliberto on a 31-yard touchdown run.

Eli Smith on a 21-yard touchdown reception and Meadows PAT.

Smith led in rushing with 11 carries for 41 yards while Diliberto had three carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns. Diliberto also had 12 pass receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown.

Sean Thompson led the defense with 11 tackles and one sack.

The task ahead gets much tougher however, with powerhouse region opponent Hoover coming to call this Friday
