Calera soars past B.B. Comer

The Class 3A Calera Eagles continued to soar this past week coming off a season opening win over Vincent and a big 49-18 regional win over B.B. Comer at home last Friday night.

The win leaves the Eagles at 2-0 overall and 1-0 in regional play. But before the Eagles can rest on their laurels, another regional opponent in Montgomery Catholic awaits the Eagles on the road this week.

&8220;It was just a team effort,&8221; said Calera head football coach Mac Thompson of the victory over B.B. Comer.

Thompson said the game allowed him to play Paul Winterbottom at quarterback in the second half and to move starting quarterback Earl Haynes to the H position.

Thompson said B.B. Comer ran a shotgun offense and that his defense did a good job of adapting.

The Eagles jumped out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter and led 21-0 by the half.

While B.B. Comer scored two touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth, the Eagles continued to lead 28-12 and 49-18 in those same quarters.

Calera posted 416 yards of total offense to 180 yards for B.B. Comer. They got there by rushing for 246 yards and passing for 170 yards.

B.B. Comer was limited to 179 yards on the ground and 1 yard through the air for a total of 180 yards of offense.

Calera never turned the ball over in this contest while taking one fumble away from the visitors.

Leading rushers for Calera included Dominique Wilson, 13 carries for 136 yards and one touchdown; Winterbottom, one carry for 57 yards and one touchdown; and Earl Haynes, seven carries for 45 yards.

Haynes completed five of nine passes for 114 yards for the Eagles while Winterbottom completed two of five passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns for Calera.

Kaderius Lacey caught three passes for 89 yards for the Eagles while Haynes caught one pass for 45 yards and a touchdown and Chris Cunningham caught one pass for 11 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles.
