A new shelter in Chelsea is giving women who are victims of abuse a second chance.

When the 13,000-square-foot Hannah Home facility opens at the end of this month, it will be the largest of its kind in the State of Alabama.

The facility will be able to house up to fifty women and children at any given time &8212; giving them plenty of space to recover and rebuild.

Hannah Home officials say that the new building will help answer some of the 200-plus calls they get each month from women in need of a safe haven.

With a price tag of nearly $1.25 million, the facility will give abused women and children that haven.

According to Hannah Home officials, there are already 15 people waiting to move in to the new facility. Each of these individuals will have the luxury of a private room. There are 10 suites available for mothers and their children on the first floor of the building, with the upstairs reserved for women without children.

All of the funds for the facility were raised through charitable donations from businesses and the local community, while volunteers offered up furniture and their time to help complete the new building.

Despite all that has been done with this facility, there is still much left to do. The Hannah Home organizers will continue fundraising to help maintain the facility and properly care for its occupants through counseling and support programs.

This facility and the efforts that take place within its walls are a God-send for women in our community who have been abused and mistreated.

With help from the community, this building is more than just bricks and mortar.

It&8217;s the gateway for abused women to recover, regroup and rebuild their lives.
