Church Focus: Wilsonville Baptist stays active

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, October 24, 2006

Wilsonville Baptist Church has been reaching out to the community for almost 130 years.

The church sponsors several town-wide events each year, including a vacation Bible School and a Block Party that features food, inflatables, games and others kid-friendly attractions.

Also, on the first Wednesday of each month, the congregation enjoys a pot-luck dinner.

Wilsonville Baptist has several events for children each summer, including a Kids Camp in July for second through sixth graders. In early August, the youth of the church spend a day on the Coosa River as part of Youth River Day.

The church also sponsors a lunch for senior citizens every second Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m.

However, the congregation reaches out to more people than just the local community. The church also sends laymen on several World Changers Mission trips. In recent years, members have gone to Puerto Rico and Benton, Ark.

A group is gearing up to send school supplies to New York as part of &uot;Graffiti&uot; mission trip to benefit the homeless.

Rev. Steve Thomas is the current pastor of the 127-year-old church, which is located on the corner of Church and Main Street in Wilsonville.
