Shelby County enjoys states lowest unemployment rate

Shelby County continues to have Alabama’s lowest unemployment rate, Gov. Bob Riley announced Friday. Only two percent of county residents who want jobs can’t find work.

The numbers, which were released Friday, have the state’s unemployment rate at an all-time low of 3.2 percent. The previous smallest number of unemployed Alabamians was 3.3 percent, a level reached in March and September of this year.

The creation of more than 11,000 jobs in October propelled the state to the record low.

&uot;Our incredible Alabama economy continues rolling forward,&uot; Gov. Riley said. &uot;Our economic growth is historic and brings thousands of new jobs to the citizens all across the state. Alabama’s high quality workforce continues to help us attract new companies and gives many of our existing industries the confidence to expand.&uot;

The number of employed Alabamians grew from 2,129,821 in September to 2,141,200 in October. The number of unemployed Alabamians fell from 73,706 in September to 71,204 in October. A year ago the state’s unemployment rate stood at 4.0 percent.
