The Wilsonville Fire Department will soon add a new fire engine to their fleet.
The town council voted last week to buy a 2007 Sutphen Shield pumper truck from Clay Fire Equipment in Ashland for $267,653. The truck will replace a much older 1964 model.
Fire Chief Davy Edwards said the council had been working toward the purchase since 1999, when the last truck was bought. When the deal is finalized this summer, the department will have three engines:
1989, 1997 and 2007 custom cabs.
The trucks will be rotated between Wilsonville&8217;s two fire stations.
The department is also working toward a brush service unit and a support trailer to be added at a later date. The brush service unit will aid in grass fires and the support trailer will hold extra materials needed for more complex fires.
&8220;We try to do everything we can to provide better service for the community,&8221; Edwards said. Edwards has been with the Wilsonville Fire Department for 29 years and says many volunteers have been serving the community for the same amount of time.
&8220;We try to keep around 20 to 23 [fighters] on staff. We don&8217;t have much of a turnover rate. Everyone here works together,&8221; Edwards said.
The station still holds its first pumper, a 1954 model. The 1964 pumper will be up for auction after the new truck arrives
