After losing a buzzer-beating thriller in overtime two weeks ago to Oak Mountain, the seventh-ranked Spain Park Jaguars rolled forward on a five game win streak before falling to Thompson on Saturday.

The Jags started the week with a vengeance, defeating Oak Mountain 50-34 on Tuesday, Jan. 23 for the first time in the history of the rivalry, all but sealing the 6A, Area 11 regular season. Jake Drum and Jay Prater teamed up for 12 points each in the win that gave the Jags a game lead over the Eagles, while holding Oak Mountain&8217;s leading scorer, Ronnie Mack to just eight points.

Spain Park moved on to capture the area title Friday night with a 47-37 victory over Vestavia Hills.

Drum joined Josh Magette in the Jags&8217; area-clinching victory to combine for 23 points and secure home-court advantage for next week&8217;s area tournament.

The win avoided a possible first place tie with the Eagles, who followed Michael Hester&8217;s nine points to overcome a halftime deficit, 19-14, and edge Hoover 22-21.

The Jags&8217; win streak came to an end in a non-area game with Thompson, 57-55, on Saturday. William Green led the way with 12 points, while Cameron Terry and Drum added 11 points each.

Spain Park (22-5, 5-1) begins a three-game road series tomorrow, as they travel to Homewood and Grissom on Thursday and Friday and then John Carroll on Tuesday, Feb. 6. They will host the area tournament beginning Friday, Feb. 9.

In other action:

Thompson Storms forward: The Warriors improved to 18-5 behind Gary Cunningham&8217;s 18 points and Siddeeq Cooper&8217;s 16 points, including the game winner in Saturday&8217;s defeat of Spain Park.

The victory completed a two-game sweep of the week for Thompson, who completed a 6-0 run through 6A, Area 10 last Tuesday with a 59-35 win over Hueytown. Cunningham led the way with 17 points.

Pelham splits final area games: The Panthers (5-20, 1-5) split a pair of 6A, Area 10 contests on the week, defeating Jackson-Olin 58-43 on Friday after falling to Hueytown 50-45 last Tuesday. Steven Clark led the Panthers with 21 points, while Devin Harris and Rodney Billings each added 12 points against J-O. Clark also posted a team-high 19 points in the loss to Hueytown.

Last two area games slip past Lions: Briarwood Christian watched as their last two 5A, Area 8 games slipped past them. John Carroll rallied from behind to pull off a 49-44 comeback victory on the Lions&8217; home court last Tuesday. Wesley Lynch scored 13 points to help lead the Lions, who were up 33-24 at the half, but the Cavs rallied to hold Briarwood scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Lynch added 17 points in Friday&8217;s 44-36 loss at Ramsey. Austin Thames also had 11 points for the Lions (16-10, 1-5). Briarwood hosted Chilton County last night and travels to McAdory on Friday to close out the regular season before traveling to John Carroll for a rematch with the Cavs in the area tournament next Friday.

Vincent continues to sting: The Yellow Jackets collected a pair of wins for the week, defeating Winterboro 59-50 and Chelsea 50-42. Josh Kelley led the way past Winterboro with 18 points, while Cameron Posey scored 14 to lead in the win over Chelsea. Eric Arrowood swatted the Hornets with a double-double 12 points and 10 blocks.

Chelsea rolls at home: Matt Wooten and Davin Palmer scored 12 and 10 points respectively to lead Chelsea past Fayetteville 57-40 on Monday. Stephen Icolano led the Hornets with 15 points in last week&8217;s loss to Vincent.

Holcombe posts 1,000 to improve Lions: Nick Holcombe passed the 1,000 career point plateau with an 18-point, eight rebound performance in Friday&8217;s 55-43 victory over Springwood. Cody Owens collected a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds to help the Lions close their regular season area schedule 6-0. Kingwood (15-6) followed Nathan Allen and Owens&8217; 18 and 14 points respectively last Tuesday to defeat Chambers Academy 62-20. Owens added 26 more in Monday&8217;s 62-46 win over Marion Millitary Institute. Holcombe had 19 points.

Calera drops pair: Kaderius Lacey led the Eagles with 14 points, Kyle Nichols kicked in 12, but the combination was not enough to halt Shelby County from pulling out a 65-63 victory last Tuesday. Calera dropped their second game of the week on the road at Altamont on Friday, as Lacey added 18 points.

Bulldogs drop two: The Montevallo Bulldogs fell to Bibb County 58-41 last Tuesday, after defeating Billingsley 57-44 the night before. T.J. Cottingham led the way with 11 points, while Stefan Gilbert and Kelvin Reed each had 10. Cottingham led the way again on Thursday with 17 points, as the Dawgs fell to Jemison 65-56. DeJuan Fulgham had 11 points, while Reed added 10.

Hope blows past Garywood: P.J. Bignuelle scored 17 points and pulled down 10 boards, as Hope Christian (14-5) defeated Garywood Christian 65-29. Adam Davis contributed 14 points and 10 assists.
