HELENA – After suffering a tough loss at home early in the week, the Helena Huskies bounced back in a major way to defeat the Chilton County Tigers on Senior Night on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The Huskies used a powerful offensive performance to earn a convincing 61-34 win over the Tigers, getting contributions on the scoreboard from every player in the lineup.

Helena got things going quickly in the first quarter, seeing seven different players put up points. Senior Joseph King was the leading scorer in the first eight minutes with two two-pointers and a free throw, but every scorer contributed roughly equal amounts.

The Huskies got a big spark from a 3-pointer off the hand of Nathan Reid, ultimately helping them in scoring 18 points to open up the game.

Chilton County had big answers of its own however, knocking down three 3-point shots to keep things in close proximity for the time being. At the end of the first, Helena held an 18-11 advantage.

The Huskies took the momentum they got in the opening period and carried it into the second. This time, Nate Ferguson took charge, racking up eight points in the quarter and showcasing his range with two 3-pointers.

On top of Ferguson’s hot performance, Helena took advantage of its chances at the line and converted on four of its five free throws in the quarter. The defense also held strong, only giving up eight more points and heading into the break with a comfortable 36-19 lead.

The Huskies decided they were not done just yet though. The third quarter saw more exceptional offense around the entire team, as seven different players got on the scoreboard once again. Kevin Pinkard was the only one who scored more than two points in the process, putting up four.

Helena recorded 16 points in the third quarter, expanding on its lead in a monumental way thanks to its play on the defensive side of the ball, only surrendering two points to the Tigers out of the break.

As they headed into the final period on their home floor for the 2025 season, the Huskies held a 52-21 lead and could start running the clock out towards a win. Denton McDonald scored three of the team’s nine points in the quarter, leading the way in the home stretch.

While Chilton County was able to convert on three 3-pointers thanks to Aiden Smitherman and Samuel Sims, it was nowhere near enough to pose a threat to the strong performance that Helena had put on. For the Huskies, it was a solid final performance on their home floor for the regular season.

Ferguson led Helena in scoring on the night with 10 points, all of which came in the first half. Torrey Ward trailed right behind him with nine, while Pinkard and Drew Davis each knocked down eight points. King added seven of his own for the game with McDonald putting up six. Reid also contributed five points, while Elijah Hudson dropped in four.

The Huskies will end the regular season by taking the road with their 14-11 record to face Oak Mountain on Thursday, Jan. 30. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Oak Mountain High School.
