COLUMBIANA – The Shelby County Wildcats left no doubt against the Montevallo Bulldogs on Friday, Jan. 24, as they demolished the visitors 63-17.
Kenna’d Buie finished the game with 24 points for Shelby County, outscoring the entire Montevallo unit by herself. Sanyia Floyd and Morgan Arnold joined Buie in double figures as the Wildcats’ offense overwhelmed Montevallo’s defense.
No player for Montevallo scored in double figures. Makiyha Cathey was the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs, finishing the game with nine points. Outside of Cathey, no player for Montevallo scored more than three points.
Shelby County jumped out to a 24-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Buie scored 13 of her 24 points in the first, wreaking havoc in the paint and outside of the arc. Cathey was the only player to score for the Bulldogs in the period, scoring a 2-point bucket and a free throw.
The second quarter saw the Wildcats diminish their offensive output but continue their defensive masterclass, outscoring Montevallo 12-3 to head to half with a 36-6 lead.
Buie did not score in the second, but Kaydence Connell scored all six of her points in the quarter to propel the Shelby County offense.
The third quarter was another Wildcats’ rout as they outscored the Bulldogs 20-2. Buie once again dominated, finishing with 11 in the quarter. Cathey was once again the only Montevallo player to score in the quarter, as the Bulldog offensive attack had no answer for Shelby County’s stifling defense.
The fourth and final quarter was the lone bright spot for Montevallo in a night to forget, as they outscored the Wildcats 9-7. Cathey scored four points as Shelby County head coach Ashley Phillips rested his starters.
Up next for the Wildcats is a trip to Sylacauga on Monday, Jan. 27 to face the Aggies at 6 p.m. Montevallo will look to rebound on the same night, hosting Westminster School at Oak Mountain at 6 p.m.
