CHELSEA – The Chelsea girls basketball team closed out area play and celebrated senior night in style on Friday, Jan. 24, taking down visiting area foe Spain Park.
The Hornets got another big performance from senior leader Haley Trotter, who poured in 21 points on senior night to help lead the team to a 59-32 victory that cemented a perfect 6-0 record to finish area play in the regular season.
Chelsea scored 20 or more points in the first two quarters and gave up single digits in three of the four to gain an early lead and build it throughout en route to the dominant effort that saw six different players score at least five points.
The Hornets were able to create the separation needed right out of the gate, posting 20 first-quarter points behind eight from Trotter.
Olivia Pryor, Sydney Carroll and Kamryn Hudson each added four points in a balanced start, while the defense came out determined, limiting Spain Park to six points in the opening period.
Leading by 14 points, all the Hornets did from there was improve offensively in the second quarter with 23 points that saw Caroline Brown pour in eight points, while Sadie Schwallie scored her five points in the game.
Meanwhile, the defense gave up just two more points than the opening quarter at eight points, allowing Chelsea to build a 43-14 advantage at the halftime break.
The second half became about protecting the lead and the Hornets did just that.
Spain Park was able to capitalize on that approach slightly, outscoring Chelsea 14-9 in the third quarter, but the talented Hornets’ defense was more than enough from there.
Leading 52-28 entering the fourth quarter, Chelsea gave up only four points in the final period, scoring nine more to complete the dominant effort.
In addition to Trotter’s 21, Carroll and Schwallie finished with six and five, respectively, to celebrate senior night. Meanwhile, Pryor finished with nine as the team’s second-leading scorer, while Hudson and Hudson each chipped in eight.
Spain Park was led by eight from Tori Flourney in the loss, while Teagan Huey finished with six.
