HELENA – The Helena City Council plans to accept the resignation of Helena Police Chief Brad Flynn at a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Jan. 27.

The council posted its planned agenda for Monday’s meeting, which names the first order of business for the meeting as being the acceptance resignation of the the police chief. Flynn addressed the resignation in an official Facebook post on Friday, Jan. 24, discussing his time at the department.

“Over the past three decades I have dedicated my life to my community,” Flynn said. “As you get older, and more of your friends begin to retire, you begin to think more of your career mortality. Eventually all good things come to an end. It’s been the biggest honor of my life to wear the badge of chief for the past four years and of all the ranks I’ve achieved over my career. Now it’s time to take my final badge and turn the page to my next chapter in my life.”

Flynn has been the police chief for the city since 2020, but has worked with the department as a whole since 1995. He began his career in law enforcement as a reserve deputy in Jefferson County before making his way into Mountain Brook for a little over a year of service. Following his time there, he settled into Helena, where he has been ever since.

Flynn cited family and health concerns as part of the reasoning behind his decision, understanding that it is time for him to make the change for his future.

“I’ve always heard, ‘you’ll know when it’s time,’” Flynn said. “I ordered this badge last year knowing my time was nearing, and after some serious health and family concerns, now I know it’s time for me to change one badge for the other.”

Flynn said that he has been proud to call Helena his home for 30 years, and that it has been an honor to serve his community in this way.

“I hope I’m leaving the police department better than I found it and that they continue to make our community prouder and safer,” Flynn said. “That is all that matters to me. Helena first. And I thank my wife and family and friends for their never ending support of my career, even when it has caused them unnecessary stress and frustration.”

Flynn expressed his gratitude for all the city of Helena has done for him and his family, saying he will always be a big supporter of the Helena Police Department.

“Thank all of you for your support of not only our department, but me and my family,” Flynn said. “I’ll still be around and will always be the police department’s and city’s biggest supporter. It’s been a great run, and I’ll always be thankful for the opportunities this city has given me. Thank you Helena. I hope we made you as proud of the men and women who are dedicated to serving you, as you have made it for us to serve you. Here’s to the next chapter, but Helena will always be home.”

Helena City Council member Alice Lobell expressed her appreciation for Flynn’s years of service to the city and wished him well in his future efforts.

“I would just like to thank Chief Flynn for his 30-plus years of service to the city of Helena, and I wish him well in any and all endeavors he chooses to pursue,” Lobell said.

The council is set to consider the appointment of a new interim police chief during the meeting and further information will be released following the resignation’s approval on Monday, Jan. 27.
