HOOVER – Hoover City Councilman Derrick Murphy announced that he is seeking reelection to Place 5 on the Hoover City Council in the Aug. 26 election later this year.

Murphy was first elected to the council in 2016 and ran unopposed in 2020. Prior to being elected, Murphy served as the former president of the Hoover Board of Education. Murphy has also served the city of Hoover and the region in multiple roles such as on the Hoover Board of Zoning Adjustment, Charter board member of Hoover YMCA, Alabama School Board Association Advisory Committee, Hoover Public Safety chair and State of Alabama Safe Dam Coalition Technical Committee.

Additionally, Murphy created the Hoover City Dad Brigade in 2015 which mobilizes hundreds of volunteers to help local schools spruce up before the start of the school year. This year’s installment of the event is scheduled for Saturday, July 15.

“An initiative such as this creates unity and partnerships in Hoover,” Murphy said.

Murphy was raised in the Ensley community of Birmingham by his grandparents, the late Arthur-Robert and Ruth B. Murphy. He has lived in Hoover since 2005. Murphy’s wife Shenavia, is a licensed attorney, and they have three children, including Galien, Hoover High graduate, Bailyn and Asher-Robert.  Murphy is a member of Hunter Street Baptist Church.

Murphy is a Civil Engineer with undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. As an executive in the water industry, Murphy aims to leverage his expertise in large infrastructure development to serve his community.

According to Murphy, Hoover’s growing population and business expansion are indicators of a healthy, thriving city and with that growth, Hoover has become the sixth largest city in Alabama with the largest high school in the state.

“I will continue to keep my commitment to understand the needs of our school district, our planning and zoning board and our residents to develop strategies that meet the needs of today without compromising the quality of life for future generations,” Murphy said.

Murphy shared that he believes the common characteristic Hoover residents are looking for is an honest candidate and one that will ensure the city of Hoover’s public safety, schools and infrastructure—such as stormwater assets maintenance—remains a top priority.

Murphy shared that the following items are goals during his term:

  • Maintaining and funding schools
  • Strengthen funding for public safety
  • Focus on stormwater and infrastructure planning and sustainability
  • Parks and recreation and performing arts opportunities supporting business owners

“Ensuring excellent schools, maintaining our standard of excellence with regard to public safety and keeping Hoover’s momentum with smart, sustainable growth will be my priorities as Hoover city councilman,” Murphy said.
