Everything looked the same for Shelby County basketball teams when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released the fourth edition of its high school basketball media rankings on Thursday, Feb. 23.
The Chelsea Hornets maintained their No. 7 ranking in the Class 6A girls basketball top 10 while the Oak Mountain Eagles earned a nomination in the Class 7A boys rankings and the Briarwood Christian Lions were nominated in both the Class 5A boys and girls rankings.
Chelsea held on to its No. 7 spot in Class 6A after going 2-0 since the last rankings released. The 18-8 Hornets earned a 24-point win on the road at Pelham on Friday, Jan. 17 before defeating Mississippi’s Neshoba Central by 25 on Monday, Jan. 18 at the Brookwood MLK Day Classic.
As a result of that latest area win, Chelsea clinched the top seed in Class 6A, Area 8 and will host the area tournament during the week of Feb. 3.
Oak Mountain dropped to 19-7 on the season after losing a pair of area games in the past week. The Eagles fell by 11 points on the road at Hewitt-Trussville on Friday, Jan. 17 and by 32 points at home to Hoover, MaxPreps’ No. 4 team in the country, on Monday, Nov. 20.
Oak Mountain will finish out area play on Friday, Jan. 24 at home against Vestavia Hills at 7 p.m. A win would trigger a three-way coin flip for the No. 2 seed while a loss would book a date with undefeated Hoover in the area tournament semifinals.
The Eagles will then close out the regular season with a road trip to Calera on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. and a home game against Helena on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
Briarwood’s boys are now 16-9 on the season and 3-2 in area play. The Lions beat Shelby County by 36 in area play on Thursday, Jan. 16 before dropping a road test to Northridge by 26 on Saturday, Jan. 18 and an area game against Sylacauga by two on Wednesday, Jan. 22, the latter of which occurred after the rankings released.
Briarwood’s girls team improved to 16-9 at the time of the rankings thanks to a last-second win over Shelby County on Thursday, Jan. 16 and a seven-point road win at Class 6A Northridge on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Since the rankings released, the Lions defeated Sylacauga 46-26 on Wednesday, Jan. 22 to get to 5-0 in area play, clinching the top spot in Class 5A, Area 8 and hosting rights for the area tournament, which will take place during the week of Feb. 3.
Briarwood will close out area play on Friday, Jan. 24 on the road at Central-Clay County, with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys set to take the floor at 7 p.m. The Lions will then close the regular season at home against Mountain Brook on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
