BROOKWOOD – The Spain Park Jaguars used their off day for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to earn their third win of the four-day weekend as they dominated the Bibb County Choctaws in showcase play.

Spain Park defeated Bibb County 70-44 on Monday, Jan. 20 at Brookwood High School as part of the Brookwood MLK Day Classic.

Sam Fox fueled an early offensive rally for the Jags, scoring eight points in the opening quarter of play. Tommy Morrison scored five in the first quarter while Harrison Stewart had four points off two field goals, all of which helped Spain Park get the early advantage in the game.

The Jags defense was also on point and allowed just five points in the first quarter to give them a 20-5 lead at the end of the first.

Fox, Morrison and Stewart did not score in the second quarter, but they passed the scoring baton to Walker Coxhead, who scored five in the second, Jonathan Fonbah, who had four points during that time, and Quinn Davis, who scored his first field goal of the morning.

That helped Spain Park outscore Bibb County 11-9 in a tighter second quarter, extending the halftime lead to 31-15 in the process.

The Jags continued to spread the scoring out across the entire offense as the bench got more involved. Morrison added five points to get into double figures while Stewart added to his total and Noah Hendrix, Crawford Blevins and Lee Guthrie each hit their first baskets of the game.

With the Choctaws unable to get more of their offense involved, Spain Park remained in front going into the fourth quarter, this time with a 47-23 lead.

Bibb County’s offense erupted for 21 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to close the existing gap, let alone what the lead stood at once the Jags finished scoring.

Guthrie, Blevins and Nash Davis took over in the fourth as Guthrie and Davis each hit a pair of 3-pointers while scoring eight points in the final eight minutes while Blevins added five points to his four from the third quarter.

Those were enough to help finish off the 26-point win and extend Spain Park’s win streak to three games in a row.

Morrison and Guthrie tied for the Jags team high with 10 points each while Blevins scored nine points. Fox and Davis each had eight points, Stewart scored six points and Fonbah finished with four points.

Spain Park improved to 11-16 with the win. The Jags will finish out area play with their next game on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on the Chelsea Hornets.
