Chelsea, Thompson win at MLK Indoor Track Classic as Calera, Helena, Pelham also shine

BIRMINGHAM – Some of Shelby County’s best athletes were among the best finishers at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Indoor Track Classic on Monday, Jan. 20 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The Chelsea Hornets and Pelham Panthers took the stage in the first meet while the Calera Eagles, Helena Huskies and Thompson Warriors competed in the second meet.

In the first meet, Chelsea’s Mia Dunavany won the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:17.92.

The Hornets’ Ty Cason finished in second place in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:22.34.

Chelsea had two of the top five spots in the boys 1,600-meter run as Conner Campbell finished in third place with a time of 4:23.72 and Hudson Williams came in fifth with a time of 4:24.97.

Pelham’s Emily Wester secured her team’s best finish in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:16.14. Two other local runners joined her in the top 10 as the Hornets’ Juliette Edwards came in ninth with a time of 5:27.88 and Hannah Quick earned 10th with a time of 5:31.30.

Chelsea’s girls 4×800-meter relay team came in third place with a time of 10:24.24 and its boys 4×400-meter relay team earned seventh place with a time of 3:40.56.

The Panthers’ Ryan Martin finished in 10th place in the boys long jump with a mark of 19-03.75.

In the second meet, Thompson’s Akasha Dudley won the girls shot put with a mark of 38-04.50 to add to her successful indoor track season.

Calera’s Elijah McKoy came in second place in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.59.

Helena’s Anden Armstrong earned second place in the boys high jump with a mark of 6-02.00.

The Warriors’s Fabienne Shuler finished in second in the boys shot put with a mark of 49-10.50.

Thompson’s girls 4×200-meter relay team came in fourth place with a time of 1:44.95.

The Warriors’ Arianna Hall came in fifth in the girls triple jump with a mark of 4-10.00.

Thompson’s Jhaidyn Suggs earned fifth place in the girls 60-meter dash, and her teammate Cherish Brewer finished just behind her in sixth place with a time of 7.87 seconds.

Jaliyah Bryant of the Warriors finished in sixth place in the girls triple jump with a mark of 33-03.25.

The Eagles’ Reignan Evans came in sixth place in the girls shot put with a mark of 35-00.50.

Camp Herndon of the Huskies finished in sixth place in the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:28.96.

Thompson’s boys 4×200-meter relay team came in eighth with a time of 1:31.68.

Helena’s Merritt Sanders finished in ninth place in the girls long jump with a mark of 15-04.50.

Calera’s Braxton Brooks came in 10th place in the boys triple jump with a mark of 40-10.75.

The Huskies’ Abigail Parsons finished in 10th place in the girls pole vault after clearing a height of 8-06.00.
