The Chelsea Hornets dropped one spot in the latest girls basketball media rankings after the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its latest top 10 lists for boys and girls basketball on Thursday, Jan. 16.
Chelsea was one of four local teams nominated for the rankings as the Oak Mountain Eagles boys basketball team and the Briarwood Christian Lions boys and girls basketball teams received nominations from the media.
Chelsea fell to No. 7 in the Class 6A rankings after previously checking in at No. 6 last week and No. 3 in the Dec. 18 rankings.
The Hornets have done their part and continued to win, improving to 4-0 in Class 6A, Area 8 and 16-8 overall after defeating Spain Park by 14 on Thursday, Jan. 7 and Helena by 23 on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Both victories came on the road.
Chelsea will be back in action on Friday, Jan. 17 when the team travels to Pelham to take on the Panthers at 6 p.m. The Hornets will then be in showcase action on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day against Mississippi’s Neshoba Central on Monday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m. at Brookwood High School.
Oak Mountain received a nomination for the Class 7A boys rankings as the Eagles have amassed a 19-5 record but are 1-2 in the difficult Class 7A, Area 6.
Oak Mountain defeated Hewitt-Trussville 58-49 to start area play but have since lost 79-41 to Hoover and 53-50 to Vestavia Hills, both of which were on the road.
The Eagles will kick off the back half of area play on the road at Hewitt-Trussville on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
Both Briarwood’s boys and girls basketball teams were nominated as they continued strong seasons in their return to Class 5A.
The boys are 15-7 on the year and 2-1 in area play after splitting their last two area games, first a six-point loss on the road to Sylacauga on Jan. 7 before a 16-point win over Central-Clay County on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at home.
As for the girls, they are 14-9 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Class 5A, Area 8. Over the past week, they defeated Sylacauga 56-18 on the road and beat Central-Clay County 53-31 at home.
Both sets of Lions will be back home on Thursday, Jan. 16 as they host the Shelby County Wildcats at Briarwood Christian School, with the girls set to tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
