VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets bounced back from a 56-23 loss to Ranburne with a statement performance at home in area play.
Vincent defeated the Horseshoe Bend Generals 63-43 on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at Vincent Middle High School, getting to 3-1 and second place in the area standings in the process.
KK McGinnis dominated in the opening quarter, scoring 11 points to help the Jackets offense get going early. MaKayla Perkins hit a pair of baskets in the first quarter as Vincent took a 19-5 lead into the second quarter.
Perkins added five more points in the second as she played a key role in the Jackets’ deep shooting during the remaining minutes of the half. She hit a 3-pointer alongside TK Smoot and Emily Morgan to help pace the offense.
Once again, Vincent’s defense dominated in the second quarter and allowed just six points. That allowed the Jackets to take a commanding 32-11 lead ahead of the halftime break.
MaKayla Perkins, Kinsley Perkins and McGinnis fueled the offense in the third quarter as each player made a pair of field goals. While Horseshoe Bend found more success on the offensive end, Vincent continued to outpace the Generals and led 48-24 at the end of the third.
The Jackets used that dominant lead to keep the visitors at bay and see out the win in the fourth quarter.
Kinsley Perkins added five more points to her total, but the bench also got involved with the game in hand. Caely Keller and Kylie Newton each hit 3-pointers while Hollany Maddox scored four points in the final eight minutes as Vincent sealed the 20-point win.
McGinnis led the Jackets with 15 points and MaKayla Perkins scored 13 points to get into double figures. Kinsley Perkins finished with 12 points, Newton and Maddox each had six points and Smoot earned five points.
Vincent improved to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in Class 2A, Area 8 with the win. The Jackets will have a pair of non-area games before their next area contest, first on Friday, Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. at home against the Childersburg Tigers.
