Oak Mountain’s John Shoemaker breaks indoor state record as county athletes compete in Hump Day Octameet

BIRMINGHAM – Five local county teams participated in an annual staple of the indoor track and field calendar at the Hump Day Octameet on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Like the name implies, the Oak Mountain Eagles, Pelham Panthers, Thompson Warriors, Briarwood Christian Lions and Indian Springs School hit the track on Wednesday instead of Saturday ahead the MLK Indoor Track Classic, but unlike the name, nine teams competed for top positions on the podium.

Headlining the county performances was the Eagles’ John Shoemaker who etched his place in the Alabama record books.

Shoemaker set the state record for the indoor boys 1,600-meter run with his time of 4:08.65. He finished 10 seconds ahead of teammate Cooper Jeffcoat, who earned second place with a time of 4:18.77.

Shoemaker also earned second place in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.52.

Thompson’s Micah Fleming won the boys 60-meter dash with a time of 6.92 seconds, beating out his teammate Kayden Washington and his second-place time of 7.02 seconds. The Warriors made it three in the top five with Cameron McKenzie’s time of 7.14 seconds, which was good enough for fifth.

Pelham’s Anthony Sanders won the boys 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.42. He came just ahead of Oak Mountain’s Hobbs Kelly, who came in second place with a time of 1:02.41.

Thompson’s Fabienne Shuler came in first in the boys shot put with a mark of 48-05.00. Pelham’s Trenton Bennett finished fourth in the same event with his mark of 41-09.00.

Thompson’s Cherish Brewer won the girls 60-meter dash with a time of 7.87 seconds, and she was one of four county runners to finish in the top five. The Warriors’ Jhaidyn Suggs finished second with a time of 7.92 seconds, Oak Mountain’s Chryslyn Gray secured third with a time of 7.98 seconds and Pelham’s Jayana Miller earned fifth with her time of 8.15 seconds.

Thompson’s Loen Boackle won the girls 400-meter run with a time of 1:00.50.

Oak Mountain’s Catarina Williams claimed the girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:16.76. Her teammate Ava Fields came in second place with a time of 2:17.10 and Pelham’s Emily Wester finished fourth with a time of 2:19.64.

Riley Leckemby won the girls 400-meter hurdles for Oak Mountain with a time of 1:11.89. Anna Beth Chapman made it two Eagles in the top three with her third-place time of 1:17.68.

Pelham’s girls 4×200-meter relay team won first place with a time of 1:47.82 as Oak Mountain came in third with a time of 1:49.32.

Thompson’s Akasha Dudley took first place in the girls shot put with a mark of 37-08.00, and her teammate Alaura Myers came in fifth with a mark of 33-01.00.

Pelham’s Sofia Ballesteros won the girls high jump after she cleared a height of 4-09.00. Her teammate Jocelyn Elliott and Mountain Brook’s Mary Jim Doyle also both earned the same mark to give Elliott second place and Doyle third.

Briarwood’s Gavin Gurtis took second place in the boys 400-meter run with a time of 51.40 seconds, and Thompson’s Jayden Alexander was right behind him in third place with his time of 51.69 seconds.

Oak Mountain’s Samiah Jones earned second in the girls long jump with a mark of 16-04.50. Briarwood’s Ava Doss took fourth in the same event with a mark of 15-09.50.

Jones also came in third in the girls triple jump with a mark of 33-09.50.

Pelham’s Emma Grace Howard took second place in the girls 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.90 seconds, beating out Briarwood’s Livi Reebals, who finished in third with a time of 10.11 seconds.

Thompson’s girls 4×400-meter relay team finished second with a time of 4:14.92.

Briarwood’s Mary Grace Parker finished in third in the girls 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:07.84.

Oak Mountain earned third in the boys 4×400-mter relay with a time of 3:29.58 while Thompson secured fourth with its time of 3:30.86.

Harper Richey earned fourth place for Oak Mountain in the girls pole vault after clearing a mark of 9-09.00.

Indian Springs’ Quinn Conroy took fourth place in the boys 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:56.40.

Pelham’s Anthony Sanders came in fourth place in the boys 60-meter hurdles with his time of 8.76 seconds.

Thompson’s Khalid Boykins earned fourth place in the boys triple jump with a mark of 41-11.00.
