With area play now in full swing, the Alabama Sports Writers Association resumed its regular high school basketball rankings, and this time, the Chelsea Hornets took a tumble.

Chelsea dropped three spots to No. 6 in the Class 6A girls basketball rankings when the second edition of the top 10 released on Thursday, Jan. 9.

The Hornets remain the only team from Shelby County to be ranked in the top 10 in boys or girls basketball.

Chelsea was previously No. 3 when the last rankings released prior to Christmas break.

Since then, the Hornets went 1-2 at the Big Orange Classic in Hoover, beating Homewood but losing to 7A No. 4 Bob Jones and Clay-Chalkville, and 1-1 in the Athens Border Wars, losing by one to No. 3 Hartselle before defeating Oxford.

Chelsea then beat Northridge 45-12 ahead of its area opener against Helena, which it won 67-22 on Friday, Jan. 3.

The next day, the Hornets would see their three-game losing streak snapped in a tough road test to Mississippi’s Pontotoc in the Tangle on the Trail showcase on Saturday, Jan. 4 before turning around and dominating Pelham 81-42 on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Chelsea is now 14-8 on the season and will wrap up the first half of area play on Thursday, Jan. 9 on the road at Spain Park at 5:30 p.m. The game was previously scheduled for Friday, Jan. 10 but was rescheduled due to the forecasted winter weather that day.
