CALERA – A firearm has been safely secured by law enforcement after a Calera Middle School student brought the weapon to campus on Thursday, Jan. 9.

According to Shelby County Schools, on the morning of Jan. 9, a student was reported to have brought a weapon to Calera Middle School and law enforcement were immediately notified.

The weapon was located and appropriate protocols were taken to ensure the safety of those present. The firearm was secured by law enforcement officials who are currently conducting investigation.

“Thanks to the quick efforts of our school staff and law enforcement, there was no disruption to the school day,” read an official release by Shelby County Schools.

According to the Calera Police Department, the student was taken into custody and charges are being pursued.

“Immediate law enforcement action is called for in situations like this to ensure the safety (of) students and staff,” Calera Chief of Police David Hyche said.

Due to the nature of the situation, Hyche highlighted the importance of parents engaging in dialogue with their children regarding firearm safety.

“Open conversations between parents and children about the dangers of firearms and the responsibilities that come with them can significantly impact safety,” Hyche said. “Parents should stress with their kids the importance of reporting any suspicious behavior or items to school authorities. Additionally, securing firearms at home is crucial to prevent access by children. Community vigilance and communication with school resource officers can help create a safer environment for everyone.”

Due to federal law guarding the privacy of students, the school system is not able to give further specifics on the situation at this time.

“The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority and we are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment,” read a release by SCS.
