Shelby County Schools has announced its closure for Friday, Jan. 10 due to the projected threat of winter weather.

Both Jefferson and Shelby County have been placed in the Elevated Risk category for winter weather on both Thursday and Friday, resulting in the system’s announcement that all schools and offices will be closed on Jan. 10 for both students and employees.

Despite the closing, all after-school activities that are set for Thursday, Jan. 9 are expected to proceed as normal, including all of the county’s basketball games.

Shelby County was put under a Winter Storm Watch for both Thursday night and all of Friday. The advisory in the Elevated Impact Area indicates hazardous driving conditions, including possible closures and disruptions to infrastructure.

The county is expected to be impacted by heavy snow that is mixed with sleet and freezing rain. From late Thursday night into late Friday night, two to five inches is projected to fall between the snow and sleet.

Efforts are currently being elevated by the Alabama Department of Transportation ahead of the weather front, with certain routes already being pretreated. The low temperatures and precipitation may cause icy roadways and patches of black ice.
