HOOVER – The Oak Mountain Eagles and Spain Park Jaguars made an impact on the Scott Rohrer Tournament as they took home individual titles to cap off strong team performances at the Finley Center in Hoover on Dec. 27 and 28.

As a team, Oak Mountain finished in fourth place with 151 points while Spain Park tied for eighth place with Pell City with 119.5 points.

A big chunk of those point totals came from each team’s individual wins as the Jags’ Bradley Williams won the 159-pound division and the Eagles’ Trey Denny took the 134-pound division title.

Williams made his way to the championship of the main bracket with a fall in the Round of 16, technical fall in the quarterfinals and another pin in the semifinals.

That gave him a matchup with Catholic-Baton Rouge’s Kristian Scott, a rematch of their championship match at the Gulf Coast Clash which Williams won by a major decision. This time, Williams claimed a dominant technical fall victory by going up 22-4 at the 4:20 mark of the match.

With the tournament win, Williams remains undefeated with a 31-0 record. The reigning Class 7A state champion of the 144-pound division has continued dominating even with a move up in weight.

This is his fourth championship of the season as he took the 157-pound divisions in the Gulf Coast Clash, Spartan Invitational and Dick Clem Memorial ahead of his win at the Scott Rohrer Tournament.

Denny also earned his place atop the podium with a first-place finish in the 134-pound division. He took three of his four wins in bracket competition by technical fall, including in the semifinals against Catholic-Baton Rouge’s Luke Brickey and championship against McAdory’s Nolan Hinkle.

Denny is now 31-4 on the season after following up his win at the Swede Umbach Invitational earlier in the month with his second tournament title of the season.

Oak Mountain’s Jameson Thomas took second place in the 115-pound division after reaching the finals with technical falls in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals and earning a 9-3 decision over Daphne’s Micah Swiger in the semifinals.

James Franklin gave the Eagles another second-place finish as he won three straight matches in bracket play to make the 140-pound finals, including an 8-0 major decision over Catholic-Baton Rouge’s Phillip Street in the semifinals.

Spain Park’s Josh Milazzo earned third place in the 140-pound division after he earned a pinfall and a decision to reach the semifinals. He bounced back from a semifinal loss to eventual champion Elijah Wilson of Pell City with a 15-0 technical fall against Street in the third-place match.

Oak Mountain’s Peyton Gamble also took a third-place finish in the 217-pound division. He made it to the semifinals with a pair of falls in the first two rounds of bracket play but hit a snag in the semifinals. He beat out Gardendale’s Broc Righter in a 5-3 decision to claim third place.

The Eagles’ Collin Denny earned fourth in the 122-pound division after making the semifinals with an 11-1 major decision in the Round of 16 and a 12-5 decision win in the quarterfinals.

Oak Mountain’s Griffin Gardner fell in the quarterfinals of the 122-pound division, but he bounced back with three straight wins in the loser’s bracket capped off by a third-period fall against Daphne’s Tobyas Boyett to earn fifth place.

Coleman Sovine took fifth in the 167-pound bracket for the Eagles after he won three straight matches in the loser’s bracket, including a 15-9 decision against Gardendale’s Brady Brooks in the fifth-place match.

In addition, Oak Mountain and Spain Park each had two wrestlers place in the consolation brackets.

Joseph Holt won the 140-pound consolation bracket for the Eagles with four straight wins, including an 8-3 decision in the finals. His teammate Bentley Haney took third in the 128-pound consolation bracket.

The Jags had two fifth-place finishers in consolation brackets as Sawyer Hardy placed in the 146-pound division and Carlos Flores earned fifth in the 177-pound division.

Spain Park’s London Ford finished in seventh in the 122-pound division after racking up four technical falls during the tournament. His teammate John Maalouf earned eighth in the 177-pound division to round out the placing wrestlers for the Jags.
