ALABASTER – Just in time for the new year, Alabaster put up banners across the city in celebration of the Warriors’ 7A State Championship win.
The Thompson Warriors secured their fifth state title in six years on Wednesday, Dec. 4 with a 21-7 win over Central-Phenix City. In celebration of their new milestone and in honor of excellence in Alabaster schools, the city’s public works department placed banners at every major intersection on Monday, Dec. 30.
“We’ve been really blessed as a city to see the success the football team—and really all of the Thompson teams—have had over last couple of the years,” Alabaster Public Relations Manager Neal Wagner said. “We’re incredibly proud of them and all the athletes and coaches and all of the parents.”
The banners were purchased from Nelson Print & Promo and are located at the major intersections of Highway 119, with more located near Thompson Road and at intersections near the promenade.
Wagner shared that he hopes the banner display is something the city will get the chance to continue each and every year.
“We wanted to put up as many as we possibly could in the city to let people who live here and people who may be visiting know that we’re incredibly proud of our teams and there’s a lot of community spirit and support for Thompson athletics here in the city,” Wagner said.
The red banners display the words “Thompson Warriors” alongside the phrase “State Champions” in white and bold. The banners are designed to feature wind slits in order to ensure they are more durable and last longer.
“Our goal is to be able to reuse these anytime a Thompson team wins the state championship,” Wagner said.
Wagner also shared that the city may consider ordering specific banners in the future that recognize individual teams for their accomplishments.
“We’re trying to do what we can as a city to really support the school system,” Wagner said. “We couldn’t be more proud of them, and we always want to make a really big deal about it when a Thompson team wins the state championship.”
