ALABASTER – The Alabaster City Council honored Thompson High School Junior ROTC student Ethan Crook for his efforts to help the victim of a car crash during a meeting on Monday, Dec. 8.
During the meeting, on behalf of Mayor Scott Brakefield, City Administrator Brian Binzer presented Crook with the Mayor’s Commendation for Valor and read the letter to those in attendance.
“Mayor Brakefield always wants to recognize extraordinary individuals in our community, folks who have done a phenomenal job for our community, helped their fellow man within Alabaster,” Binzer said.
On Sept. 13, Crook and his mother were headed home from a THS football game when they came across an automobile accident on Fulton Springs Road. The vehicle was crushed on all sides with a passenger trapped inside.
Crooks pulled the victim from the car and provided what life-saving care he could until emergency services arrived on the scene. After paramedics arrived, Crooks stayed at the scene to assist with questions and continued care.
“Dear Ethan, I’d like to commend you for your quick and decisive action when discovering an overturned vehicle,” read Brakefield’s letter. “You were able to provide Alabaster first responders with vital information quickly in a situation where every second counts.”
In his proclamation, Brakefield said that many individuals would have driven by the crash scene and waited for first responders to handle the situation.
“You chose to take the initiative and provide that assistance,” read Brakefield’s letter. “You are a shining example of the values taught by Thompson High School Junior ROTC program and our source of pride for entire community. We are proud to call you an Alabaster resident, a Thompson High School student and I hope your actions will inspire others in the future.”
Previously, On Nov. 13 at Thompson High School, Crooks was presented the Silver Valor Award from the Department of the Air Force and HQ JROTC Commander and Col. Matthew Tipton. The Silver Valor Award is the second highest award in the nation for JROTC.
