MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo will offer a Master of Education in special education, K-6 and sixth through 12th, starting in fall 2025.
The programs will exist online, and are designed for students who are passionate about making a difference for students with disabilities. The programs will equip individuals to support learners in various educational settings. Students who complete the program will receive an advanced, Class A professional educator certification.
“As a former special educator and now as the dean of the College of Education and Human Development, I am excited about the addition of our new master’s degree in special education,” Dr. Donna Ploessl said. “This new program enhances the already outstanding offerings of our college and demonstrates our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of educators and students alike. It is a privilege to see our college grow in ways that empower our students and faculty to make lasting impacts in the communities they serve.”
The master’s degree in K-6 special education equips students with the tools to understand the needs of learners with a wide range of disabilities. The master’s degree in 6-12 special education has a similar focus, with a shift to adolescent learners.
Admission requirements include a completed online application at Montevallo.edu/apply, a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.75 GPA or a graduate degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA from a regionally accredited college/university, an Alabama professional educator certification and two letters of recommendation.
Candidates for the programs who are employed by eligible school systems have the opportunity to receive a scholarship of up to $110 per credit hour toward tuition for all program coursework.
