CALERA – The Calera Eagles kept their strong recent form going with yet another victory, this time by 23 points over the Bessemer City Purple Tigers.

Calera breezed past Bessemer City by a score of 59-36 on Monday, Dec. 16 at Calera High School.

Devyn Goodman and Kegan Johnson paced the Eagles offense early as Goodman started off the game with seven points and Johnson scored four points in the first quarter.

Five different Calera players combined for 18 points in the opening period, which helped the Eagles get out to an 18-8 lead over the Purple Tigers at the end of the first.

That lead only grew in the second quarter as Calera’s defense continued to intensify. Bessemer City scored just four points in the second, which let the Eagles capitalize on the other end of the floor.

Johnson scored eight more points to get into double figures for the first half, which was half of Calera’s points in the second quarter. The Eagles extended their lead to 34-12 going into the halftime break.

Calera’s offensive pace slowed down in the third quarter as Goodman scored six of his team’s seven points in the period.

Three different Purple Tigers helped cut the deficit by three at the end of the third quarter, but the Eagles still held a commanding 41-22 lead going into the fourth.

The teams engaged in a high-scoring final eight minutes, combining for 32 points between them. Isreal Robinson, Mason Phillips and Johnson all scored multiple baskets in the fourth to finish off the dominant 23-point win.

Johnson led Calera with 16 points and Goodman joined him in double figures with 15 points. Robinson finished with eight points, Darion Hamilton scored five points and Phillips had four points.
