VINCENT – The Vincent Yellow Jackets continued their strong recent form with a win over a Class 5A county foe.

Vincent defeated the Shelby County Wildcats 63-51 on Friday, Dec. 13 at Vincent Middle High School, taking the momentum from its area opening win over Central-Coosa on Thursday, Dec. 12 and turning it into a second win in as many days.

The teams were evenly matched on the offensive end coming out of the gate. Jay Posey paced the Jackets offense early with eight points in the first quarter while Taye Robertson added four points during that span.

Shelby County’s balanced offensive approach continued in the early stretch as six different players scored in the first quarter. Ryan Sipes and Sutton Reed each hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter.

The two teams were tied at 13-13 going into the second quarter, but that tight nature wouldn’t last for much longer.

Robertson quickly got into double figures with seven points in the second quarter, leading five different scorers for Vincent who combined for 16 points.

The Jackets defense limited the Wildcats to just six points in the second, opening up a 10-point lead that Vincent would take into the halftime break.

Shelby County’s offense reawakened in the third quarter, scoring 15 points behind five points from Tyson Duncan, four from Andres McGinnis and a Reed 3-pointer.

Skyler McCrimon and the Jackets tried to keep up as he scored six of their 11 points in the third, but their double-digit lead stood at six going into the fourth quarter.

McCrimon carried his hot shooting stroke into the final period as he scored eight points in the fourth. Landon Archer added in five points and Robertson, Phoenix Maxwell and Camari Keller went a combined 6-for-11 from the free throw line late.

McGinnis and Nate Byrne helped the Wildcats stay in the game late as McGinnis scored eight fourth-quarter points and Byrne scored his first four points of the game. However, Vincent pulled away and secured the 12-point win in the county battle.

McCrimon led all scorers with a game-high 16 points. Robertson dropped 15 points, Posey scored nine points and Zahmir McMillan added seven points. Maxwell finished with six points and Keller and Archer each had five points for the Jackets.

McGinnis was Shelby County’s top scorer with 12 points, and Duncan joined him in double figures with 11 points. Reed and Sipes each scored seven points and Bryne had four points.

Vincent will look to improve on its 5-4 record and 1-0 mark in area play when it hosts Central-Coosa on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

As for the Wildcats, they will hope to bounce back on Thursday, Dec. 19 as they take on Thorsby at 7 p.m. at Shelby County High School.
