MOBILE – Four of the county’s brightest stars helped the North All-Stars walk away with a victory in the annual football North-South All-Star Game.
The North defeated the South All-Stars 45-24 on Friday, Dec. 13 at South Alabama’s Hancock-Whitney Stadium thanks to multiple successful kicks from Helena’s Austin Lewis.
Lewis finished with six extra points and a field goal, accounting for nine of the North’s 45 points while representing the Huskies in Mobile.
The Helena senior played a key role in a 24-0 start for the North.
He kicked extra points on the North’s three first-quarter touchdowns, a 7-yard run by Therman Moore with 9:08 remaining in the quarter, a 14-yard run by Hoover quarterback Mac Beason with 4:35 remaining in the first and a 5-yard run by Terence Gaines with 1:10 left in the opening period.
He added on a 21-yard field goal with 4:54 remaining in the second quarter to extend the lead to 24-0.
However, his services would soon be required again after the South went on a 24-0 run to tie the game up with 6:18 remaining in the game.
With Dax Varnadore in at quarterback, he launched a 64-yard pass to Tremell Washington to retake a 31-24 lead with 4:28 remaining, with Lewis tacking on the extra point.
Lewis kicked his fifth extra point of the day just 18 seconds later after Hoover’s Jamar Moultrie scored a 54-yard pick-six, taking the lead to 38-24 with 4:10 remaining. Moultrie would go on to win the North MVP award.
Moore then scored his second rushing touchdown of the day, this time from six yards out with 3:48 remaining in the game. Lewis made his sixth and final point-after of the afternoon to seal the 45-24 win.
Over on the defense, three Thompson Warriors helped the North walk away with the victory as Hayden McDonald, Nik Alston and Trenton Cheatom were a part of the All-Star roster. The trio of Warriors did not record any stats in the win.
