City of Calera raises $43K for breast cancer research

CALERA – The City of Calera, in partnership with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama raised a total of $43,262 during the Calera Goes Pink campaign.

“I’m excited to share that the 14th annual Calera Goes Pink campaign raised $43,000 for the BCRFA,” said Rachel Beatty, the Marketing & Communications coordinator with BCRFA. “Each October, in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the city of Calera comes together as a community, including individuals, businesses and schools, to organize multiple events including a golf tournament, disc golf tournament, T-shirt sales and numerous other pink-themed fundraisers. Since its inception in 2010, Calera Goes Pink has raised over $600,000.”

The revenue from Calera Goes Pink directly assists the BCRFA in its efforts to invest in breast cancer research across Alabama. Statistics show that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and the BCRFA is aiming to lower this statistic through funding research groups.

“Calera Goes Pink donates every dollar raised to BCRFA, which fuels research that promises to make the days ahead brighter,” said Kate Kiefer, a board member of BCRFA and organizer of Calera Goes Pink. “On behalf of the BCRFA, thank you to the city of Calera for their immense support for 14 consecutive years. Together, we are working to create a future free from breast cancer.”

This year’s installment of the Calera Goes Pink campaign kicked off with the fourth annual Disc Golf Goes Pink tournament. The event was held at both Oliver Park and George W. Roy Recreational Park on Sept. 14 as disc golfers of all ages competed for the purpose of fighting breast cancer.

Following the disc golf tournament, the Calera Goes Pink Golf Tournament was held at Timberline Golf Course on Oct. 24. Calera High School hosted their annual “Pink Out” football game against Helena High School the next day to wrap up the campaign.

In addition to contributions from members of the Calera community, the corporate and community partners of the Calera Goes Pink campaign included Active Air, A.C. Legg, Bham Now, Central State Bank, DR Horton, Lhoist North America, Saginaw, Volare Wealth Advisors, Vulcan Imaging Associates – Women’s and Wiregrass Construction.
