NORTH SHELBY – The Chelsea Hornets picked up another early season win in dominant fashion, this time against the rival Oak Mountain Eagles to sweep the season series.
Chelsea took a 72-36 win over Oak Mountain on Friday, Dec. 6 at Oak Mountain High School to improve to 7-2 on the season.
While the Eagles came into the matchup with momentum off of a win just 24 hours prior against McAdory, the Hornets offense kicked into high gear from the get go. Sadie Schwallie in particular excelled out of the game, scoring 10 points in the first quarter alone.
Combined with multiple baskets from Kamryn Hudson and contributions from other teammates, Chelsea took a 23-6 lead into the second quarter and never looked back from there.
The Hornets had another 20-point quarter from the offense, although this time, it was Hudson who led the way. She scored seven points in the second quarter to get into double figures while Schwallie and Haley Trotter each scored multiple baskets before halftime.
While Oak Mountain got 3-pointers from Lucy McKeown and Elizabeth Butler in the quarter, Chelsea increased its lead to 44-14 going into the halftime break.
The Hornets saved their best offensive quarter for the third as they kept their foot on the gas to grow the lead. Caroline Brown scored nine points after being held to just one free throw in the first half, leading the way for six different Chelsea scorers in the third quarter.
The Hornets outscored the Eagles 25-10 in the third to take the lead to 69-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
From there, Chelsea settled into its lead and only scored one 3-pointer the rest of the way. Oak Mountain chipped into the final deficit during the fourth quarter, but not enough to overcome the large gap as the Hornets finished off the 36-point victory.
Four Chelsea players reached double figures as Schwallie led the team with 16 points, Trotter and Hudson each earned 13 points and Olivia Pryor posted 10 points. Brown had nine points and Allie Scott finished with six points.
As for the Eagles, McKeown led with eight points, Caroline Kester had seven points and Butler scored five points.
Both teams will be in action on Monday, Dec. 9 as the Hornets travel to Mountain Brook for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff while Oak Mountain makes the trip up to Huntsville to face the Panthers at 6 p.m.
