BIRMINGHAM – The Briarwood Christian Lions picked up an impressive road win over the visiting Woodlawn Colonels on Tuesday night, Dec. 3, winning by a final score of 63-50 at Woodlawn High School.
For Briarwood, Drew Mears paced the offense with 20 points in the game, while Eli Stubbs had 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
Keijuan Johnson led the way for the Colonels with 18 points, with half of those points coming in the second quarter.
Briarwood started strong and never looked back in this contest, putting together a potent scoring attack and a stingy defense to the tune of a 19-5 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Mears and Stubbs combined to score 12 of the Lions’ 19 points in the first quarter, with Mears scoring seven and Stubbs scoring five.
While Woodlawn put together two impressive quarters in the second and third that saw them match or exceed Briarwood’s scoring output, the 14-point deficit they surrendered in the first was too much to overcome.
Mears and Stubbs were the only Lions to score in double figures. Woodlawn had three players in double figures: Johnson and Cornealius Hudson with 13 and Jeffrey Payne with 11.
Hudson’s offensive output was highlighted by a strong third quarter in which the junior guard scored 12 of his 13 points. Jeffrey Payne also had a strong third quarter, adding six points.
Overall, the dynamic duo of Hudson and Payne combined for 18 of the Colonels 20 points in the quarter.
Despite this offensive flurry in the third, Briarwood went toe-to-toe with Woodlawn in a more balanced scoring attack.
Six different players scored in the third quarter, led by Eli Stubbs with six points. Charlie Caldwell also added five in the period, and the Lions accumulated four three’s in the quarter to keep pace with Woodlawn.
Briarwood then fell 69-53 in a road test at Hartselle on Thursday, Dec. 5. The Lions will look to turn things around on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. when they travel to Helena.
