MONTEVALLO – The Shelby County Wildcats picked up a big road win over one of their biggest rivals to keep their strong start to the season going.
Shelby County improved to 5-1 on the young season with a 74-20 win over the Montevallo Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 2 at Montevallo High School.
Kenna’d Buie paced the Wildcats offense early with a big first quarter as she dropped 14 points in the opening eight minutes of the game.
That helped Shelby County score 25 points in the first quarter and take advantage of the success that its defense found, allowing just seven points during that stretch.
The defensive effort only intensified in the second quarter as the Bulldogs could only score off one free throw in the entire quarter.
Morgan Arnold and Nancy Hall scored multiple baskets in the second to increase the Wildcats’ lead to 40-8 at the halftime break.
Arnold continued to take over in the third quarter, scoring 10 points in the first eight minutes of the half to keep growing the lead.
In all, Shelby County outscored Montevallo 19-4 in the third as the Wildcats once again held the Bulldogs scoreless from the field with all of the damage from the hosts coming from the free throw line.
As a result, Shelby County’s lead grew even more to 61-12 as it continued to hold on to the game.
From there, the Wildcats cruised to victory, taking their foot off the gas on the offensive end. That allowed Montevallo to get some points on the board and end up with eight fourth-quarter points from three different scorers.
Shelby County saw out the 54-point win to keep its winning ways going with a victory over a county foe.
Arnold led both teams with a game-high 21 points. Buie was close behind her with 19 points. Sanyia Floyd scored nine points and Makayla Caldwell and Hall each had seven points in the win.
As for the Bulldogs, Zabdy Perez and Makiyah Cathey each scored six points.
