Shelby County Schools receives A on state report card

For the second year in a row, Shelby County Schools has received an A on its state report card from the Alabama State Department of Education.
Each year, the state’s school systems receive a report card that scores performance and a variety of other factors from the Alabama State Department of Education. The ALSDE has released its grades for the 2023-2024 school year.
“Shelby County Schools is pleased to announce that we scored an A on the state report card,” read an official Facebook post by SCS. “Thank you to our hard-working students, staff and administrators for empowering and inspiring excellence in your classrooms and schools.”
For the reported year, Shelby County Schools received an overall score of 90. The ALSDE utilizes a variety of metrics to arrive at letter grades for all of Alabama’s 150 school systems. The district score is based on the individual scores from schools in the system and the report card grade considers student achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, chronic absenteeism, college and career readiness and progress in English language proficiency.
Shelby County Schools serves 20,548 students at its 29 schools which are spread throughout the county. SCS’ academic achievement score for 2023-2024 was 75.77 which was an increase from the previous year’s 74.18. The indicator for academic achievement is based upon the number of students scoring within each of the achievement levels in the areas of English language arts and math utilizing summative and alternate assessments in tested grades.
SCS achieved a 99.36 in academic growth which was a decrease from the previous reported year’s 100. The academic growth indicator is based upon individual students who demonstrate improvement within growth categories in English language arts and math utilizing assessments in tested grades.
Shelby County Schools has a graduate rate of 94.35 which was a slight decrease from the previous year’s 94.98. The graduation rate indicator is based upon the number of high school students enrolled in the cohort who graduated within four years of first entering ninth grade.
SCS received a 52.78 rating in progress in English language proficiency which was a decrease from the previous year’s 54.84. This indicator is determined based upon the percentage of students who met their growth targets utilizing an assessment as measured against progress targets.
Shelby County Schools achieved a 13.53 in chronic absenteeism which was a decrease from the previous year’s 13.84. The chronic absenteeism indicator is based upon the percentage of students in grades K-12 who missed a total of 18 more days, whether excused or unexcused.
SCS achieved a score of 86.23 in college and career readiness which was an increase from the previous year’s 85.19. The college and career readiness indicator is determined based upon the percentage of students enrolled in the four year cohort who mat at least of the categories indicators.

- Calera High School – C with an overall score of 78
- Calera Intermediate School – B with an overall score of 82
- Calera Middle School – B with an overall score of 80
- Chelsea High School – B with an overall score of 89
- Chelsea Middle School – A with an overall score of 93
- Chelsea Park Elementary School – A with an overall score of 93
- Forest Oaks Elementary School – A with an overall score of 93
- Columbiana Middle School – C with an overall score of 79
- Elvin Hill Elementary School – B with an overall score of 80
- Helena Elementary School – A with an overall score of 94
- Helena High School – B with an overall score of 85
- Helena Intermediate School – A with an overall score of 94
- Helena Middle School – B with an overall score of 84
- Inverness Elementary School – A with an overall score of 96
- Montevallo Elementary School – B with an overall score of 87
- Montevallo High School – C with an overall score of 72
- Montevallo Middle School – C with an overall score of 78
- Mt Laurel Elementary School – A with an overall score of 99
- Oak Mountain Elementary School – A with an overall score of 99
- Oak Mountain High School – A with an overall score of 91
