Alabaster City Schools receives fourth consecutive A on state report card

ALABASTER – Alabaster City Schools received an overall A on its state report card for the fourth year in a row.

Each year, the state’s school systems receive a report card that scores performance and a variety of other factors from the Alabama State Department of Education. The ALSDE has released its grades for the 2023-2024 school year and Alabaster City Schools received an A on its report card.

“I’m very proud of our students, educators, parents and community members for this great achievement,” Superintendent Dr. Wayne Vickers said. “It’s our fourth consecutive year to earn an A system-wide on the state report card, and I’m very proud of all our schools. I look forward to great things moving forward.”

For the reported year, Alabaster City Schools received an overall score of 91. The ALSDE utilizes a variety of metrics to arrive at letter grades for all of Alabama’s 150 school systems. The district score is based on the individual scores from schools in the system and the report card grade considers student achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, chronic absenteeism, college and career readiness and progress in English language proficiency.

Alabaster City Schools serves 6,358 students at its five schools. On its state report card, the system received a 74.67 for academic achievement which was an increase from the previous year’s 74.53. The academic achievement indicator is based upon the number of students in areas of English language arts and math utilizing assessment results in tested grades within the achievement levels.

Alabaster City Schools’ academic growth score this year was 96.76 which marked a decrease from the 2022-2023 school year’s 100. The academic growth indicator is determined based upon students who demonstrate improvement in English language arts and math with a growth record within certain categories.

ACS received a graduation rate score of 98.21 which was an increase from the previous year’s 97.19. The graduation rate scoring system is based upon the percent of students in the system who graduated within four years of entering ninth grade.

For the 2023-2024 school year, ACS received a 40.07 on its progress in English language proficiency which is an increase from 37.55 the previous year. The progress in English language proficiency indicator is based on the percentage of students who met their growth target as measured against progress targets.

Alabaster City Schools saw a chronic absenteeism rating of 12.55 which is a decrease from the 2022-2023 school year’s rating of 12.86. The chronic absenteeism indicator is based upon the percentage of students in grades K-12 who missed 18 or more days of school whether excused or unexcused.

ACS earned a college and career readiness scored of 98.04 on its state report card which was a notable increase from the previous year’s 93.63. The college and career readiness rating is based on a percentage which his calculated by dividing the number of students in a cohort who have successfully met one or more indicators of college or career readiness by the total number of students in that grouping.

Creek View Elementary School received an A on its state report card with overall score of 97. CVES earned a 96.36 in academic achievement, a 100 in academic growth, 60 in progress in English language efficiency and a chronic absenteeism rating of 8.34.

Meadow View Elementary School earned an A on its state report card with an overall score of 96. MVES received a 94.79 in academic achievement, a 100 in academic growth, 55.26 in progress in English language efficiency and a chronic absenteeism rating of 10.76.

Thompson Intermediate School received a B on the state report card with an overall score of 89 for 2024. TIS earned a score of 82.41 in academic achievement, 92.21 in academic growth, 65.22 in progress in English language proficiency and 7.06 in chronic absenteeism.

Thompson Middle School earned a B on its state report card with an overall score of 83. TMS received a 72.86 in academic achievement, 98.34 in academic growth, 17.95 in progress in English language proficiency and a chronic absenteeism rate of 13.45.

Thompson High School received a B on its state report card with an overall score of 82. THS earned a 50.08 in academic achievement with 90.95 in academic growth, 20 in progress in English language proficiency, 98.04 in college and career readiness with a graduation rate of 98.21 and 16.77 in chronic absenteeism.
