HELENA – The Helena girls basketball team put together a consistent effort on Thursday, Nov. 21, to pick up their second victory of the season in a double-digit 47-36 win against county rival Thompson.

A big reason for the success was the hot shooting from beyond the arc in the first half, as the Huskies hit six of their seven made 3-pointers in the game in the opening two quarters.

Four of those came in the first quarter as Hannah Satterfield hit two and totaled eight first-quarter points, while Isabel Heintz and Mallory Rhodes also added one each in addition to a made basket from Amari Grant.

Even with that success, Thompson hung tough in the opening quarter with big periods from Destinee Ealy and Sydney Coney.

The two combined for all 14 of the team’s points in the quarter, but Helena’s balance led to a 16-14 advantage at the end of the period.

From there, the game became a defensive battle in the middle two quarters, going from a combined 30 in the opening period to a combined 30 over the next two periods.

The Huskies, however, got two more 3-pointers in the second quarter, leading to 10 points as a team, while the defense limited Thompson to just six points.

Helena started the quarter on an 8-3 run before Thompson clawed back slightly, but the strong defensive effort allowed them to extend the lead to 26-20 going into the halftime break.

Thompson’s defense stepped up to match that of Helena’s in the third quarter, giving up just seven points, but the Warriors could only muster up six points in the period.

The Huskies went 3-4 from the free throw line in the period, which was key in helping them extend the lead by one more to 33-26 heading to the final period.

Both teams found their offensive rhythm again in the final quarter, but Helena’s cushion was too much for Thompson to overcome as the Huskies closed out the 11-point victory.

A balanced effort featured 11 points each from Satterfield and Heintz, while Grant finished with 10 points to give the team three scorers in double figures.
