MONTGOMERY – It was a big afternoon for the Thompson Warriors as they cruised to victory in a Saturday afternoon road matchup by defeating the JAG Jaguars 68-21 on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Sydney Coney took over in the early stretch for Thompson, scoring 12 points off six field goals in the first quarter.
Four other Warriors joined her to score 21 points in the first quarter, but it was the defensive effort on the other end of the floor that made the biggest difference.
Thompson allowed just one free throw from JAG and kept the hosts scoreless from the field during the opening quarter, and that put the Warriors up 21-1 at the end of the first.
That defensive dominance carried over into the second quarter as the Jags only scored four more points before the halftime break.
Coney continued to lead the way with six points in the second and Jordyn Smith added five points to her two from the first quarter.
Thompson scored 18 points in the second quarter to make its halftime lead 39-5.
The Warriors continued piling on the points in the third quarter with four points apiece from Coney, Breanna Castille and Kayla Russell.
Thompson outscored JAG 18-9 in the third to keep pulling away, and the visitors were in front 57-14 after three quarters of play.
Coney wasn’t done scoring though, adding on five more points in the fourth in addition to baskets from Gaby Bradley, Riley Grace Cholewinski and Nadya French.
That helped the Warriors seal the 68-21 win on the road and rebound from a midweek defeat to the Mountain Brook Spartans.
Coney finished the game with 27 points, including 18 in the first half. Smith scored nine points, Russell had eight points, French posted six points, Destinee Ealy earned five points and Castille and Cholewinski each scored four points in the win.
Thompson will have a tough test on its hands for its next game in a road trip to the Huffman Vikings on Monday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m.
