VINCENT – After a bit of a slow start, the Vincent Yellow Jackets were firing all cylinders at home in a 49-0 win over the Sand Rock Wildcats on Nov. 8 in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs.
The victory earns the Yellow Jackets (9-2) a trip to face unbeaten Winston County on Nov. 15 in the second round—and a win in that one would mark the deepest playoff run in VMHS history.
“We’ve talked about wanting to put together a complete game,” Vincent coach Lucas Weatherford said. “We haven’t done that all year. It was good to see because we need to be playing our best football right now.”
Against Sand Rock, Casen Fields got things rolling with a 57-yard pass to Lane Mims, setting up a 2-yard Aiden Gasaway touchdown run and Daniel Campos point-after for a 7-0 lead.
Vincent broke away in the second quarter starting with a 52-yard touchdown run by Jayden Roberts.
Then, Roberts took a short pass from Fields 61 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0 after the Campos kick.
Just before halftime, Zach Morehead intercepted a Sand Rock pass and returned it to the 10-yard line. Fields then hit Landon Archer for the touchdown to make it 28-0 at halftime.
A quick three-play drive resulted in another touchdown for Vincent to start the third quarter. Fields took it in from 20 yards out to make it 35-0 after the extra point.
After the Vincent defense forced a three-and-out, Phoenix Maxwell returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown and a 42-0 lead.
Wyatt Carlisle closed out the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown with about 7 minutes left in the third quarter.
Roberts finished with 95 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, along with the 61-yard touchdown reception.
Fields was 3-of-7 passing for 152 yards and two touchdowns and rushed five times for 55 yards.
Vincent’s defense held Sand Rock (5-6) to 105 total yards.
