HOOVER – The Spain Park Jaguars were in command in their season opener as they kicked off the 2024-25 season with a victory.
Spain Park defeated the Carver-Birmingham Rams 47-18 on Thursday, Nov. 7 at Spain Park High School on the opening night of the high school basketball season.
The Jags came out of the gate shooting the ball well from deep as Ava Leonard hit a pair of 3-pointers as part of her eight-point first quarter and Lindy Easterling tacked on a deep ball as well.
Carver did keep it a two-possession game heading into the second quarter, but Spain Park’s 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter quickly grew.
Long range baskets from Kamia Dawsey, Tori Flournoy and Easterling paced the Jags in the second quarter and powered them to a big lead.
However, it was the defense which helped grow Spain Park’s advantage even more. The Jags held the Rams to just four points in the second quarter compared to 14 from the hosts, making the lead 27-11 going into halftime.
Carver couldn’t recover from there as Spain Park remained in control on both ends of the floor. Easterling hit another pair of 3-pointers to take her into double figures for the night, and Corey added another one as well during the third.
The Rams could only offer a field goal and a free throw in response, and the Jags’ lead grew to 39-14 by the end of the third quarter.
Spain Park added two more 3-pointers from the road as the pace slowed down in the fourth quarter. That sealed the 29-point opening night win for the Jags.
Easterling led Spain Park with 12 points, all of which came from her four 3-pointers. Leonard also got into double-figures with 11 points. In addition, Dawsey scored six points and Corey and Flournoy each had five points.
The Jags will look for another win on Wednesday, Nov. 13 when they travel to Center Point for a game at 5:30 p.m.
