Alabaster plans for traffic signal improvements on Highway 119, sets hearing for water leak ordinance

ALABASTER – The Alabaster City Council approved a grant application for traffic signal improvements on Highway 119 and set a public hearing for an ordinance requiring the repair of water leaks during a regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, Oct. 28.
During the meeting, the council approved a resolution authorizing the application of a grant through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation Improvement Program-II to assist with various traffic signal improvements and intersections along Hwy 119.
The total cost for the improvement project is $2,832,500 with the ATRIP-II funds accounting for $2,000,000 with $250,000 from Shelby County and a city match by Alabaster of $582,500.
Signal improvements are proposed for the following areas:
- Hwy 119 at Fulton Springs Road – County Road 26
- Hwy 119 at Kent Dairy Road – CR 26
- Hwy 119 at Plaza Circle/Kent Stone Boulevard
- Hwy 119 at Thompson Road – County Road 264
- Hwy 119 at 11th Ave. Southwest
- Hwy 119 at First Street Southwest
The Alabaster City Council also approved a public hearing to be set for Thursday, Nov. 7 for an ordinance that requires property owners and occupants to repair water leaks.
“Really what this is for is to protect the health and safety and welfare of Alabaster residents by requiring property owners and occupants to repair water leaks as soon as possible and in a timely fashion,” Council President Sophie Martin said. “This is really to conserve water, to prevent property damage and really to protect our public water supply.”
In other news, the Alabaster City Council approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Alabama power for power and maintenance of 20 new LED Decorative Streetlights within the Peavine subdivision in the amount of $240.80 per month.
“This is going to result in 20 new Led lights in the Peavine subdivision and it is really going to improve lighting in that area once those are put in place,” Martin said. “The council unanimously voted for this resolution, so we look forward to seeing the results of that.”
Due to the next regularly scheduled meeting falling on Veterans Day, the city moved the next Alabaster City Council meeting to Thursday, Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. with a work session set for 5:30 p.m.
