Evangel outpaces Southern Christian to set up battle for No. 1 seed

OPELIKA – Evangel Christian is one win away from locking up the top seed in the 8-man Alabama Christian School Conference playoffs after taking down Southern Christian, 41-14, on Oct. 11.
Kemp Swords had 199 yards of total offense, including two rushing touchdowns, to pace Evangel.
His early 2-yard touchdown was answered by Southern Christian, but Swords rushed for a 27-yard TD to regain the lead in the second quarter. Nick Cloud added a 2-yard touchdown before the half to lead 18-7.
Will Welch recovered a fumble for a touchdown and caught a 2-point pass to extend the Evangel lead, 26-7, before Cloud scored again on a 5-yard run and kicked the extra point to stretch the lead, 34-7.
Both teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Eli Black’s 38-yard touchdown run was answered with a Southern 45-yard touchdown pass.
Swords was 7-of-15 passing for 102 yards and rushed for 97 yards on 15 carries. Black finished the night with 91 yards rushing on four carries and a team-best nine tackles on defense. Cloud had 84 yards rushing and seven defensive stops. Welch caught four passes for 87 yards.
Evangel (7-2) will close its regular season when it hosts East Central Homeschool (8-0) on Oct. 19. The winner will take the top spot in the ACSC playoffs. Both teams are undefeated in 8-man football.
